Chapter Nine

“Liv! Wake up! The presents are here!” Miley’s excited voice filtered through the door of Liv’s suite.

“I’m awake!” Liv called back as she opened the door, a smile on her face. “Merry Christmas.”

Miley stood in her pajamas with Alexis by her side. Alexis was wearing a princess dress and a tiara. It was still dark outside, but inside, the children were making a ruckus awakening their parents and grandparents.

“Merry Christmas!” Miley said. “Can we have our presents now?”

A door opened down the hallway and Zane appeared. He was wearing pajama bottoms and a T-shirt, his hair mussed from sleep. He also wore his black-framed glasses and appeared far too handsome for that early in the morning. “Girls,” he whispered loudly. “It’s six o’clock. Let Liv sleep.”

“It’s okay.” Liv smiled, trying not to stare at him. He was so good-looking it was almost impossible not to stare. “I heard my nieces and nephews running through the hallway, so I was already awake.” She had on a robe and her hair was in a messy bun, but she’d managed to wash her face and brush her teeth before Miley and Alexis arrived.

Even if she forced herself not to notice or pay attention to the feelings, they still took her by surprise, at the oddest moments.

There was no time to get dressed fully for the day, but she wanted some coffee. The small kitchenette in her room was equipped with everything she needed, so she brewed a pot while she brushed her hair and changed out of her pajamas into some comfortable clothes.

When she stepped out of her room, Zane was just leaving his. They smiled at each other and she passed him his cup of coffee. He had changed, but he hadn’t taken the time to shave. A shadow of a beard lined his cheeks and chin and made him look even more handsome.

“The girls already went down,” he said as he paused and took a sip of the coffee. “I couldn’t rein them in for another second.”

“I’m sure my mom is there holding them back from their gifts until the adults come down.”

“I hope your mom is okay that I added my gifts for the girls among the others around the tree.”

“Of course she is.” Liv couldn’t imagine her mother having a problem with a few extra gifts.

They walked down the grand staircase and into the main room. Dad had already started a fire in the fireplace and the lights were lit on the tree. All seven of the
